Hiking the Fundy Footpath in New Brunswick Canada is a world-class wilderness experience that attracts outdoor enthusiasts from around the world. This rugged 64.3 km backcountry trail follows the dramatic Bay of Fundy coastline, stretching from the Fundy National Park Visitor Center near Alma, NB to the Fundy Trail Parkway Visitor center at Big Salmon River. With steep elevation changes, tidal river crossings, and panoramic ocean views, hiking the Fundy Footpath offers a truly immersive backcountry experience through the heart of the Acadian Forest. Known for its breathtaking beauty and daunting physical challenges, the trail is a must for anyone passionate about hiking in New Brunswick and experiencing the Canadian wilderness.
The Fundy Footpath showcases untouched landscapes, old-growth forests, and rare geological formations shaped by the highest tides in the world. Towering cliffs, V-shaped river valleys, and mist-covered forests offer an unmatched wilderness journey for seasoned hikers. The ever-changing weather, fog, and microclimate of the Bay of Fundy add to the mystique and beauty of the trail. For experienced multiday backcountry hikers and campers the Fundy Footpath offers a challenging and rewarding once-in-a-lifetime adventure. For us, highlights included enjoying spectacular views over the Bay of Fundy, exploring ancient geology on the rocky beaches, and reconnecting with nature in the lush, mossy, coastal forests.
The Fundy Footpath is also part of the 28,000 km long Trans Canada Trail, which connects the Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic Oceans. As such, it offers flexibility for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts who wish to undertake longer itineraries or further explore the Maritime Provinces. We walked this trail during our 4-year #Hike4Birds across Canada from Newfoundland to British Columbia. The Fundy Footpath was one the toughest and most technically challenging portions of the Trans Canada Trail, but it was also one of the most remote and peaceful, offering us a rare chance to truly immerse ourselves in the Canadian wilderness.
