Perched dramatically above the North Atlantic, Cape St. Mary’s Ecological Reserve is one of the most spectacular wildlife viewing destinations in Newfoundland and Labrador—and a must-see stop for anyone exploring Canada’s rugged east coast. Located on the southern Avalon Peninsula, this internationally recognized Important Bird Area (IBA) offers visitors front-row access to one of the largest seabird colonies in North America.

The star attraction at Cape St. Mary’s is its immense colony of Northern Gannets. Tens of thousands of these striking seabirds nest on the sheer sea cliffs, creating an unforgettable sight and sound. From the viewing points on top of the cliffs, visitors can easily observe Northern Gannets soaring overhead and diving into the ocean below, often just meters away. It’s one of the best places in Canada for seabird photography and wildlife watching.

The cliffs are also home to tens of thousands of Common Murres, packed tightly together on narrow ledges, as well as nesting Black-legged Kittiwakes, whose calls echo across the reserve. With over 70,000 nesting seabirds in residence during the breeding season, the density and diversity of birdlife make Cape St. Mary’s one of the top birding destinations in Newfoundland, attracting naturalists, photographers, and eco-tourists from around the world.

Beyond the seabirds, the surrounding tundra landscape adds another layer of adventure. Visitors may spot a red fox moving through the coastal terrain or even a moose, Newfoundland’s most iconic land mammal, grazing nearby. These unexpected encounters highlight the reserve’s rich biodiversity and unspoiled character.

With its dramatic cliffs, abundant wildlife, and accessible walking trails, Cape St. Mary’s Ecological Reserve delivers an authentic Newfoundland nature experience. Whether you’re planning a Canadian coastal road trip, a birdwatching getaway, or a photography expedition, Cape St. Mary’s stands out as one of the top natural attractions in Atlantic Canada.
