Discover the Past and Present Along the Columbia and Western Rail Trail in British Columbia Canada
For those seeking a unique long-distance hiking experience in British Columbia, the Columbia and Western Rail Trail offers an unforgettable mix of history, nature, and adventure. Located in BC’s stunning Kootenay Boundary region, this rail trail stretches over 160 km from Castlegar to Midway, BC, Canada. Originally part of the Columbia and Western Railway, it has been revitalized into a scenic multi-use trail perfect for hikers, cyclists, and ATV riders.
Columbia and Western Trail: A Hiker’s Passage Through History
Once used to connect mining towns, the C & W Trail is now a serene pathway through mountain passes, dense pine forests, vast river valleys, and dry grasslands. Along the route, visitors can explore wooden trestles and stone tunnels—remnants of British Columbia's industrial past. In addition, interpretive signage, rest areas, and well-maintained trailheads enhance the journey.
Furthermore, the trail’s connection to the Kettle Valley Rail Trail expands possibilities for longer explorations through Canada’s most dramatic backcountry. Wildlife such as deer, black bears, and bald eagles can often be seen, adding to the natural allure. Although the route includes a 1,200 m elevation gain, the trail maintains a shallow grade, and the historical significance and visual rewards make every step worthwhile. In addition, trail users pass through several villages and small towns, including Christina Lake, Greenwood, and Grand Forks, which offer a wide range of amenities of places to stay.
