The Headingley Grand Trunk Trail, Manitoba, Canada is an easy, 10 km long hiking and cycling trail that runs from Winnipeg's Perimeter Highway (Hwy 100) to Beaudry Provincial Park. The wide, flat, gravel track follows the abandoned bed of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, which was active from 1894-1972. Today, the path traverses the municipalities of Headingley and Cartier, and is located on Treaty 1 land. Amazingly, it offers hikers, joggers, cyclists, nature lovers, bird watchers, and photographers an opportunity to immerse themselves in nature and experience the wide open prairies only minutes from downtown Winnipeg. Opportunities for wildlife viewing abound! Colourful butterflies feast on the nectar of trailside wildflowers. Tree Swallows dart in and out of the nest boxes kindly provided along the trailside. Gulls and raptors circle overhead, while songbirds fill the fields and hedgerows with their tunes. Highlights of our mid-summer walk included Clay-coloured Sparrows, Savannah Sparrows, Killdeer, American White Pelicans, Monarch Butterflies and half a dozen White-tailed Deer.
