The Cap Tourmente National Wildlife Area, near Saint-Joachim, QC and only 50 east of Quebec City, is a popular place to visit for bird watchers, hikers, photographers, nature lovers, outdoor enthusiasts, and history buffs. Cap Tourmente was established in 1978 to protect American bulrush marshes on the shore of the St. Lawrence River, which provide essential habitat for the Snow Goose and other waterfowl during spring and fall migration. A variety of habitats including coastal marshes, plains, forests, and stunningly beautiful bluffs are home to over 180 bird species, 30 mammal species, 22 types of forest stands, and 700 plant species. In summer, an interpretive center welcomes visitors, who can also enjoy 20 km of family-friendly hiking trails, wildlife viewing blinds, interpretive signage and programs, a picnic area, and access to a number of historic buildings that remain from 400 years of farming in the area. Whether you come to enjoy the fall colours, see tens of thousands of migrating geese, or explore Canada's history, be sure to bring your cameras!
