The Harvey Moore Wildlife Sanctuary, Montague, Prince Edward Island is a 46.5 hectare bird preservation area where visitors are immersed in nature and surrounded by birdsong. Hikers and bird watchers can follow three easy, pleasant, footpaths that loop around a pair of tranquil ponds. Interestingly, the pond acts as a safe staging area for migrating waterfowl, including Canada Geese, Mallards, and Pintails. Boardwalks and a covered viewing platform offer fantastic birding opportunities, so don't forget to bring your binoculars, spotting scope, and eBird checklist! In addition, the wetland, mixed forest, and tamarack stands in the protected area support a high diversity of other wildlife species as well, including songbirds, grouse, herons, owls, and raptors. The Harvey Moore Wildlife Management Area is one of the oldest migratory bird sanctuaries on Prince Edward Island. Originally, the land was purchased in 1949 by Harvey Moore (1916-1960), an avid naturalist and outdoors person. Amazingly, over the course of a decade, the pond went from supporting a single pair of ducks to serving as a safe overwintering location for more than 6,000 waterfowl.
