Birding the North Star Rails 2 Trails route from Cranbrook to Kimberley, a segment of the BC Bird Trail, offers a rich and diverse experience for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts alike. Stretching 28 km, this mostly paved section of the Trans Canada Trail winds through scenic forests, along stunning river canyons, over rolling prairies, and past historical landmarks. Despite the rain on our journey, the trail revealed glimpses of wildlife at every turn. Notably, the Wycliffe Prairie area provided a prime opportunity to spot Western Meadowlarks, their vibrant yellow plumage standing out against the overcast sky. In addition, the Rocky Mountain Naturalists had placed bluebird homes along the trail, adding another highlight for birders who visit during the summer months. Alongside the birdlife, the trail also delivered stunning views, from the misty St. Mary's River valley to the rugged backdrop of the Purcell Mountains. As we made our way through the forested sections near Wycliffe Flats, the calls of Common Ravens echoed through the air, and Turkey Vultures circled high above. The wooden kilometre markers with their hand-carved animals, such as a perched grouse or owl, added a unique touch to the trail, reflecting the region’s rich fauna. Finally, the route is not only a visual delight for birders but also a historical journey, following the old railway bed once used for mining transport, adding depth to the exploration. The North Star Rails 2 Trails offers a beautiful convergence of natural beauty, history, and avian life, perfect for anyone seeking a deeper connection with British Columbia’s wildlife.
