Explore Halifax, Nova Scotia Through Parks Canada’s Iconic Landmark
Discover military heritage, sweeping views, and timeless stories in Atlantic Canada
Rising above the heart of Halifax, the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site is a star-shaped fortress that commands attention and inspires curiosity. Operated by Parks Canada, this iconic site is not only one of Nova Scotia, Canada's most visited attractions, but also a living museum that reveals centuries of defence strategy, colonial history, and everyday life in Atlantic Canada. Completed in 1856, the Citadel was the fourth major fortification constructed on Citadel Hill and continues to overlook one of the world’s great natural harbours. Visiting this historic spot as part of our 4-year journey hiking coast to coast on the Trans Canada Trail, our arrival at the Citadel marked a moment of reflection and connection. After thousands of kilometres on foot, standing atop Citadel Hill offered not just a view, but perspective.
During our visit, the site was brought to life by enthusiastic and talented re-enactors portraying members of the 78th Highlander Regiment (stationed at Halifax between 1869 an 1871), the 78th Highlanders Pipe Band, the Third Brigade of the Royal Artillery, soldier's wives, and civilian trades people. In addition, we timed our visit to witness the firing of the Noon Gun. This daily ritual is performed by re-enactors in 78th Highland Regiment dress. Amazingly, the salute echoes across the city—offering a powerful reminder that connects Halifax’s past with its present. Visitors can also stroll the fortified walls, explore underground passages, and immerse themselves in detailed exhibits curated by Parks Canada.
Experience Halifax Citadel National Historic Site in Every Season
Throughout the year, seasonal programming breathes new life into the Citadel. Autumn fog brings a haunting beauty to the ramparts, while summer offers guided tours, special exhibits, and costumed interpreters who animate Halifax's past. Additionally, the site now features enhanced accessibility options, family-friendly activities, and curated walking experiences tailored for slow travelers and history buffs alike. This historic site is a place where Canada's colonial past meets present-day reflection — where you can step into the echoes of empire, but also into your own quiet moment. You an immerse yourself in history by sitting on the grassy slopes, running your fingers along the weathered stone walls, pausing to admire the sweeping view of Halifax, Nova Scotia and the shimmering Atlantic beyond, or immersing yourself in the sounds and rhythms of history. For slow travelers, it’s a rare kind of landmark: one that holds space for both story and silence.
