Uncover the Beauty, History, and Wildlife of the Kettle Valley Rail Trail

The Kettle Valley Rail Trail is one of British Columbia's most iconic rail trail experiences, offering an unforgettable outdoor adventure through the province's wild and rugged interior. Stretching approximately 484 km from Midway to Hope, BC this historic multi-use route welcomes cyclists, hikers, and in some designated areas, ATV users. Originally developed by the Canadian Pacific Railway to transport valuable minerals from the Kootenay Mountains to Vancouver, the abandoned railway route now winds past orchards, lakes, canyons, rivers, and desert terrain, showcasing the remarkable natural diversity of the Okanagan Valley and Boundary Region. In particular, the 20.1 km stretch through Myra Canyon Provincial Park — with 18 towering trestle bridges and two rock tunnels—is a must-see highlight. Although western portions past Princeton have been affected by wildfires and landslides, the rest of the trail remains open, well-maintained, and actively improved by local trail groups and tourism partners.

Outdoor Adventure on the Kettle Valley Rail Trail

Today, the Kettle Valley Rail Trail is promoted as one of Canada's premier long-distance cycling routes. In many areas, improvements have been made to trail surfaces, bridges, and access points. Additionally, bike-friendly accommodations, cafes, and campsites have been added throughout the Boundary Region, making multi-day trips both comfortable and convenient. Frequently, wildlife such as deer, bear, snakes, and eagles can be seen along the route. Furthermore, interpretive signage and historic markers now offer insight into the railway’s construction and cultural significance. Furthermore, the consistent rail-grade incline makes it suitable for riders of all ages and skill levels. Because of this, the trail is enjoyed year-round by tourists and locals alike.

Hiking and Cycling Through the Okanagan Valley and Myra Canyon

In the Myra Canyon section near Kelowna, stunning mountain vistas and elevated wooden bridges provide unforgettable views and photography opportunities. This stretch is especially popular for day trips and short hiking excursions. Often, families with children and first-time cyclists are drawn to its accessibility and low-impact terrain. Recently, shaded rest stops and interpretive panels were added to enhance visitor experience. Even during the warmer months, breezes from the canyon’s elevation make this section enjoyable. Notably, the trail’s blend of wilderness and engineering heritage continues to impress adventurers from around the globe.
