Tershishner Falls in Clearwater County, Alberta is a hidden waterfall adventure. Tucked away in David Thompson Country on the northeast side of Abraham Lake. This relatively easy out-and-back hike is just under 4 km return, following a beautiful creek through a narrow canyon surrounded by rugged Rocky Mountain scenery.
The trail begins right off Highway 11 and is fairly easy to follow, making it a rewarding day hike for waterfall lovers exploring the Nordegg and Abraham Lake area.
The hike starts off mostly flat and gentle before gradually becoming rockier with exposed roots and uneven footing. As you get closer to the falls, the trail narrows and becomes steeper along the canyon wall. During spring runoff in May, higher water levels can make the route a little more adventurous, sometimes requiring hikers to carefully scale sections of the canyon wall to keep avoid wet shoes. Later in the season, the creek bed becomes easier to walk, making this hike more family friendly for kids and casual hikers.
There are trails along both sides of the creek. The west side currently has a large pile of washed-out trees blocking part of the trail, though a quick log crossing helps reconnect hikers to the route. The east side trail is marked with orange flagging tape, making navigation simple and straightforward. Adventurous hikers with strong climbing skills may choose to scramble above the falls, though there is no easy route up. Loose rock, steep drop-offs, and narrow footing make extra caution essential in this section.
Tershishner Creek Falls is a lovely hidden gem hike near Abraham Lake, offering canyon views, rushing water, peaceful forest scenery, and a quieter alternative to some of the busier waterfalls along the Icefields Parkway and David Thompson Highway corridor.
