Canada or Texas? Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo VS The Calgary Stampede
Kicking off rodeo season across Western North America, from Texas to Canada!
Canada goes to Texas… or does Texas come to Canada?
I did get the opportunity to talk about our Calgary Stampede while down there to quite a few vendors!

Canada goes to Texas… or does Texas come to Canada?
I did get the opportunity to talk about our Calgary Stampede while down there to quite a few vendors!
At first glance, it might actually be hard to tell we are not at our local Stampede event.
Without focusing on the finer details, you could easily mistake the scenes in this album for the Calgary Stampede in Alberta, Canada. But this is the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo in Texas, USA.
So why share a Texas album on a Canadian travel site?
Because this experience felt surprisingly like home.
From the friendly people, to the western wear, to the incredible food, vendors, and a midway that absolutely makes your jaw drop, the similarities are undeniable. It’s a reminder of just how connected western culture is across borders.
Of course, there are a few differences…
• Space — Texas does everything big. With roughly 350 acres compared to Calgary’s 200, there’s more room to roam (and a little more elbow room too).
• Variety — With that extra space comes even more food options, rides, shopping, and experiences to explore.
And here’s where things get interesting...
The Houston Rodeo runs for 23 days, while the Calgary Stampede packs everything into just 10 days.
So you might expect attendance to be wildly different… right?
Not exactly.
2025 Attendance
Texas: 2,735,695
Calgary: 1,470,288
But when you break it down per day:
• Houston ≈ 118,900 visitors/day
• Calgary ≈ 147,000 visitors/day
That means Calgary actually sees more people per day! And that is something that might surprise a lot of folks!
Just a few fun facts from this Canada vs. Texas rodeo comparison.
Keep an eye out for the full blog, where I dive deeper into the similarities, differences, and what makes each of these iconic events so special. All from a Canadian Adventure Seeker’s perspective.

The crowds felt similar to our Calgary Stampede, on the busiest Saturday afternoon.

One major difference we noticed was the size of the Houston Midway compared to ours. They had at least 3 different ferris wheels!

These slides are a midway favourite. You'll find them everywhere from small town festivals, to some of the biggest rodeos in the world.

I have lived in the west for awhile now. And it is always an exciting time when rodeo season kicks off. High energy events pop up all over the place.

Wow is it hot in Houston! This March afternoon was the same as our peak summer temperatures in Alberta! So their March rodeo and our July rodeo would be the same for temperatures.

Corn! Alberta loves their corn. And it was very obvious that Texas does too!

My favourite thing to do at our Calgary Stampede, is check out the wild and crazy foods they come up with. Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo was no different! A spicy pickle with a fruit roll up....what!?! Haha

Those colossal fries were literally at least the length of an arm! Biggy's had great food.

We had heard about the huge turkey legs at the Houston Rodeo. Brad had one and said it was amazing.

Interesting difference here between the Houston Rodeo and Calgary Stampede Rodeo concerts.
This is their Rodeo Grounds...the stage rolls out and spins! It was quite cool to see.

It was a full house for Kelly Clarkson. The twinkling lights at concerts are always so pretty.

The concert line ups are amazing in both Calgary, Alberta and Houston, Texas for the Stampede performances. Both events attract big name artists.

I found the prices and number of tickets needed for the midway to be quite fair in Houston.

Maybe it was just me, but the prizes seemed bigger in Texas. Everything seems bigger in Texas! Lots of people walking around with massive stuffies.

My stampede boots made the journey to Texas! In Calgary the odd person has similar style boots...here in Texas, I saw so many amazing versions of glittering boots!
