At 3.1km long and built out of reinforced concrete, the Brooks Aqueduct was the largest aqueduct of its type in the world! Built by the Canadian Pacific Railway in the early 1900's. The Government of Canada and CPR hoped to bring water security for agriculture in the area and thereby encouraging settlement of the region. The Brooks Aqueduct was in operation for 63 years and now both a Provincial Historic Resource and a National Historic Site.

There is a fun playground for the kids to enjoy, a picnic area, washrooms, and walking paths interpretive signs to explore at the Brooks Aqueduct. The Brooks Aqueduct is a must-see destination when visiting the area. At less than a 10min drive from the City of Brooks makes a great daytrip adventure for the family.

It is interesting to climb up on the hill near the Brooks Aqueduct. The hill is part of the new, more efficient earthen canal replaced the original canal in 1979. Here you can see both canals side by side. Before the canal being built it was thought that this part of the province was unusable since there were no natural water sources in the region. Now, it is the most productive agricultural area in the province with consistently high-quality yields.

Kinbrook Island Provincial Park is a 14min drive south from the City of Brooks. It is a great destination for day tripping or camping when visiting the region.
Lake Newell on which the park is situated is the largest and warmest man-made lake in Alberta. Interestingly, Lake Newell is a large water reservoir managed by the Eastern Irrigation District. The lake's primary purpose is to collect water to be redistributed of agricultural irrigation across the region via the aqueducts we visited earlier on the tour. Lake Newell and the Kinbrook Island Provincial Park are also important recreation areas. Popular activities include picnicking, birding, fishing, power boating, sailing, swimming, hiking, volleyball, and cross-country skiing.

This is a large, nice, and well treed lakeside campground. Interestingly, there are no naturally grown trees in the Brooks region. Every tree that you can see has been planted including all the trees on Kinbrook Island. Which is thanks to the Brook's Kinsmen Club it is also very well treed.

The Kinbrook Island Provincial Park Campground really does make it easy to plan your stay. Not only is there a small store that offers pre-ordered picnic baskets, but they also sell pre-ordered Campfire Baskets! How impressive is that? With snacks available at the tore, picnic lunches, a campfire dinner and dessert, all that you will need to pack is breakfast. They take away all the stress of preparing for your trip so that you can actually sit back, relax and enjoy yourself at Kinbrook Island Provincial Park and campground.

Kinbrook Island Provincial Park is easy to get to from the City of Brooks, Alberta. It is 13 km south of Brooks on Highway 873. This is a large campground with 199 sites suitable for RVs and tents. There are 14 unserviced and 185 powered sites to choose from.
