Once upon a time the Gainford Hotel's pub near Seba Beach Alberta Canada was a favourite stomping ground for university students heading out to the lake for the weekend. Alas, that was from another time long ago. Some would even say it was a century ago. Sadly, the hotel shut down in 2013 and sat empty for a number of years. However, during our last few trips out to Jasper National Park and to Sundance Provincial Park, we noticed that something had re-opened. This piqued our interest. Not to mention, that since it reopened, there were always lots of cars there.
We had worked up quite an appetite during our recent Christmas Tree Hunt Adventure Near Chip Lake. Being about halfway home and just after lunch time, we decided to stop and check it out. Are we ever glad that we did! You know all those times driving home from Jasper when you are tired and hungry and don't know what to make for dinner. Well, we just solved that problem. From now on, we'll stop at Java and Gems Get Stuffed restaurant in the Gainford Hotel for dinner. In fact, we are even adding it to our - where to get breakfast on our way to the mountains list too.

Gainford is a tiny hamlet of 118 people in Parkland County, Alberta. It is 86km west of Edmonton on Highway 16 (Yellowhead Highway) near Isle Lake and Seba Beach on Wabamun Lake. The Gainford Hotel first opened its doors to welcome guests in 1958. Later, the doors closed for what most thought would be forever in 2013. Fast forward to 2023 and the Gainford Hotel is welcoming guests once more. Although the hotel hasn't reopened, the Iron Lady Saloon along with Java and Gem Get Stuffed Restaurant have.

Depending on where you are traveling from on your visit to the Gainford Hotel, don't worry about the name. They mean it in the you will be so full you can't eat anymore sense. In fact, they are very welcoming and have great customer service. So, nothing, like the slang term used in other parts of the world.

Java and Gems Get Stuffed restaurant in the Gainford Hotel is a bright and cheery spot to stop for a bite to eat. I like the happy pop of colour that the lime green adds to the place.

As expected by the restaurant's name, we were stuffed after our soup and sandwich lunch special. However, who can resist testing out homemade blueberry pie??? It was a tough job, but it wouldn't have been a proper foodsploring (food + exploring = foodsploring) adventure if we didn't try the pie, would it? The java (aka coffee) is good here too. They don't make any fancy sugary coffees, just a good old-fashioned cup of coffee.

The revitalized Gainford Hotel seems like a fun place to grab a bite to eat and to hang out with some friends. On the way back to Edmonton from Jasper National Park, the Gainford Hotel makes a perfect stopping place for dinner.
