Set inside a restored historic fire hall in downtown Cranbrook, Fire Hall Kitchen & Bar is one of those places that immediately pulls you in. It blends old building character with a modern gastropub feel, serving up craft cocktails, comfort food, and a lively atmosphere right in the heart of the Kootenays.

It is also part of the same local food and drink story as Encore Brewing, and together they reflect how much Cranbrook’s dining scene has grown in recent years. What I like about Fire Hall is that it does not try to reinvent what it is. It works with the building it has, and that gives the whole place its personality.

You can still see the building’s past in the structure and original details, now carried into its current use as a gastropub. It is a cool, welcoming, fun spot and very much a go-to place to eat out with friends in Cranbrook. The space has real character, with its heritage reflected in the decor and the overall personality of the place.

Here is a closer look at what stood out to me.

A classic gastropub plate done right. A hearty burger, crisp fries, and straightforward, satisfying flavours that hit the spot after a day in the mountains or exploring Cranbrook.

One of my favourite details in the space. An original fire ladder has been reused as a trellis for plants, keeping a visible link to the building’s past life as Fire Hall No. 1. It is a small design choice that adds character without trying too hard.

A cocktail list that is easy to get into, with names that actually make you look twice like Dirtbag Lemonade, Pear of Friends, and the Fire Engine Caesar. It fits the space. There is a bit of personality to it, and nothing about it feels overworked.

If you have never had a Caesar before, it is a Canadian classic made with vodka, Clamato juice, spices, and usually a salted rim, often topped with something extra. It was created in Calgary back in 1969, so seeing it on the menu here, especially with a firehall twist, feels right at home in this part of BC.

This building was once Cranbrook’s fire hall, and that history is still easy to pick up on when you are here. Fire Hall No. 1 played a real role in the city for years, and instead of being replaced, it has been kept and used in a new way. It is one of those places where the past is still part of the experience, just in a more everyday, lived-in setting.

The building in winter has a warm, inviting contrast against the snow. The brick exterior and glowing interior make it feel like a natural stop in downtown Cranbrook, especially during colder months when places like this become gathering spots.
