The Sackville Waterfowl Park, nestled in Sackville, New Brunswick, is a serene 55‑acre wetland sanctuary that welcomes visitors year‑round with free admission. Located just a short walk from downtown, the park features 3.5 km of accessible trails and boardwalks, including a segment of the iconic Trans‑Canada Trail. The flat, easy trails wind through rich marshes, offering up-close views of birds and other wildlife, cattails, wetland flora, and shimmering waterways—a perfect setting for birders, photographers, nature lovers and family outings alike. Amazingly, over 150 species of birds have been reported in the marsh, including ducks, geese, swans, warblers, shorebirds, and wetland species. In particular, in spring and summer the wetland comes alive with breeding birds, while during spring and fall migration season thousands of waterfowl rest at this important stopover spot of the Atlantic migration route. Educational presentations are offered from May to August, including free guided tours. These guided walks highlight the park’s ecological importance, the Acadian dyke system, and Mi’kmaq history, making them especially engaging for families. Additionally, interpretive signage and viewing platforms are thoughtfully placed along the route to encourage self-guided learning and wildlife mindfulness. Furthermore, visitor amenities within the park are highly accessible, with many boardwalks and pathways that are wheelchair-friendly, pit toilets located along the route, and outdoor seating areas situated at scenic spots throughout the wetland. In 2022, Sackville, NB became the first Canadian town to be accredited as a United Nations Ramsar City Wetland Site, meaning it is celebrated internationally for its role in wetland conservation and climate adaptation. Whether you arrive with a bird book, binoculars, camera, stroller, or picnic, the Sackville Waterfowl Park delivers a peaceful, educational, and visually stunning escape into New Brunswick’s natural splendor.
