My husband is from a very small community in rural Newfoundland called Point Lance - the 2021 census shows the population as 87 people. It has likely dwindled since then. It's about a two hour drive from St. John's, the capital city and the primary occupation of its residents is in the fishery. We have a house a in Point Lance and because I am able to work from anywhere, we frequently visit. We finally got real dose of winter in Newfoundland so there is lots of lovely snow and things are frozen over. I've long wanted to follow Point Lance River which winds its way well back into the wild country behind Point Lance. It is time for some Newfoundland Winter Hiking in Point Lance. What better time than when it is (mostly) frozen over and we can walk right on it! We did a 12km return walk and enjoyed lots of rabbit and fox footprints along the way. The river is open in places but given how shallow it is, breaking through the ice doesn't pose a danger. I'm looking forward to following the river again in the summer for a neat comparison. I expect the going will not be as easy!

Pretty much back to the road. Above the bridge is the road leading into the community. The river, of course, runs under the bridge. I'm not sure if you can see the ocean in the distance in this picture, but it's there!

Nearly back out to the start there are some cool layered rocks. In fact there are several examples of cool geology in this area of the province.

Me on higher ground. Not long after this we cut back down to walk the river again.

Getting up onto higher ground for a short while to take a look around us. Don't be fooled by the grasses poking through the snow, it was knee deep in places.

The snowy season is a great time to see footprints. I love the reminder that we are not alone out there and that we are sharing space with other creatures who have just as much (or more) of a right to be there as we do.

A bit of a blurry pic but we were very surprised to find a fly of some sort crawling along the snow. Unexpected company indeed, and the only other soul we saw on this excursion.

The open parts of the river make for a beautiful vista of snow and water.

Starting the walk up the river. Lots of snowmobile tracks indicating others have been out enjoying the snowy and frozen conditions.
