The town of Brigus is a very popular tourist destination in Newfoundland. Founded in 1612, it is an area of historical significance and a delight to visit. Located approximately 80km west of St. John’s, it is accessible as a day trip for visitors from out of province and staycationers alike. There are beautifully restored homes and buildings throughout the town, along with other stops of note. It is a very walkable town and walking is recommended, both to take in the sights and to avoid traffic congestion – the roads are very narrow and winding. There are several places to park in the town including near the town hall and at the ball field. You can easily spend a day in Brigus sightseeing and visiting the niche and charming shops.

For the hiker there is also the Brigus Lighthouse trail accessible from the town. This approximately 6.5km out and back hike provides beautiful coastal views and interesting geology inland. The lighthouse is an iconic symbol of Atlantic Canadian life and provides a great photo op! Brigus is worth a visit for the town or the trail. Why not do both in the same visit and have a picnic while you’re at it! The grassy picnic area has been the site of many a birthday celebration for our family.
