Banksyland is a 22-city international touring exhibition. It brings the art, activism and the intrique of the world's most elusive artist, Banksy to the people. This immersive experience includes orginal and studio works, salvaged street artworks, and never-before-seen installations. Having discovered that we narrowly missed seeing Banksy's murals in Paris a few years ago, I was happy to have a second chance when Banksyland made a stop in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Before we get to the Banksy's I want to share the incredible views of the Edmonton river valley from the Pendennis building where the exposition was. In this view you can see a few of the city's popular attractions, the Muttart Conservatory (the pyramids) and Edmonton Ski Club (The bit with snow). Additionally, the hill to the left of the Muttart is Gallagher Park, home to the Edmonton Folk Music Festival in the summer and a great spot for tobagganing in the winter. On the North Saskatchewan River you can see the Edmonton Riverboat. And lastly, the new bridge is part of the Valley LRT line making getting around the city on public transportation a easier.

One of the most beloved pieces and infamous pieces created by Banksy is the Girl with the Red Balloon. The painting is meant to represent the moment that the innocence of childhood is lost. However, you may remember this painting for the stir it caused a Southby's auction wehn the second it sold for $1.4 Million (USD) an alarm sounded triggering a mechanism hidden in the frame to shred the painting. The shredded piece was renamed, Love is in the Bin. Don't feel bad for the person that bought the painting that was then destroyed though. They later sold it for $25.4 million USD!

Upset with the government's response to help the people of New Orleans after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina Banksy paid a visit to New Orleans Louisianna (Nola). Nola, the Umbrella Girl is a commentary on how things that are supposed to protect us can be the very things that harm us, like the flood defenses that failed to protect the citizens.

Who doesn't love Banksy's Flower Thrower? This one appeared in 2003 in the West Bank. It contrast an image which at first glance appears to be a violent protest, however the protestor is throwing flowers. It is a symbol of peaceful resistance and of conquoring violence with love.

This looks like a romantic photo of a couple taking a picture of Rat Love. Does it symbolize that even if rats, the worst of the worst can find love, anyone can? Or, does the dripping paint represent a rat with a broken heart and a less than stellar future for this couple? Hopefully, Bansky intended the first interpretation of the painting.

Pictures on Walls at Banksyland is a collection of screen printing completed by Banksy between 2003-2017. The style and colours suggest these were inspired to Andy Warhol's style.

Laugh now but One Day we will be in Charge depicts a monkey protesting its oppression and enslavement. It is Banksy's criticism of the way people have treated animals through poaching, forced entertainment and medical or cosmetic testing.

Stop and Search...of Dorothy??? That just seems somehow ridiculous, but is it? The Wizard of Oz was my favourite movie as a kid. I just love Dorothy's adventures in a far off land. Clearly, I found her adventure seeking nature relatable. I guess technically, she illegally entered Oz. This Banksy depicts Dorothy and Toto being stopped and searched. The message, that even the pure, sweet and innocent Dorothy isn't free from the menacing influence of the state.

The message in the Banksy Sale Ends Today on display at Banksyland in Edmonton is pretty clear. Is shows society's blind devotion to consumerism.

I wonder if Copper and Bomb Love in Edmonton Alberta Canada were placed together to contrast shallow love and protection which thinly veils violence underneath and the other appears to be very violent, but is about the power of love.

Liberté, égalité, cable TV is one of the Paris Bansky's that I missed. Sadness. I guess I will just have to go back to Paris on an Adventure Seeking Banksy mission. Oh, shucks. This one resonated with me because of its direct jab at the French values of freedom and equality in the context of the 2010 Burka Ban, their treatment of immigrants and their response to the European refugee crisis. It very clearly shows their reluctance to truly embrance their values of Liberté, égalité, fraternité.
