Astonin Lake is a popular year round destination as a day use park with picnic amenities and hiking trails. A portion of the lake is maintained throughout the winter for ice skating.

Lakeview Trail is an easy 3.7km long trail with panoramic views of Astontin Lake and winds through aspen and black spruce bogs. The trail takes 1-2 hours.

By the mid-1800's the fur trade eliminated beavers from this area. Beavers were re-introduced to the area by parks staff in the 1940's. The population appears to be doing well now.

Beaver Pond Trail is about 3.68km and takes a little under an hour to walk. Although there was evidence of wildlife and bison in the area we didn't encounter any on this trail.

A park pass is required to enter Elk Island National Park. Passes can be purchased at the Visitor Information Centre.
