Jasper is a true mountain sport adventure town. Located in the heart Jasper National Park in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, Jasper has a relaxed and rustic style. The majority of shops and restaurants are locally owned and independent making it a fun place to wander around and explore. As we are usually heading out for some type of outdoor adventure we don't get to spend as much time wandering around town as we should. I forgot how good the shopping is here. I think the next time we visit Jasper; I will plan for it to be a shopping spree.

If you would like to plan a Jasper Adventure, then I recommend Jasper in January. This is Jasper signature month long festival with great packages and deals to be had.

Since Jasper is in a National Park, a Parks Canada Pass is required for exploring the town and the park.

The Jasper Visitor Information Centre (VIC) is one of my favourite mountain parks buildings. I really like the rustic log and stone architecture. Built in 1914, this was the first major building in Jasper. It also defined what would become Jasper's architectural style.

This is a great first stop when visiting Jasper. Here you can find information on front and backcountry camping, hiking trails, the best paddling spots, skiing, events, and even where to see wildlife. The Jasper VIC has all the maps and permits needed for any outdoor adventure in the park.
During the summer, the park space out front is a nice place to relax and read a book or to have a picnic.

Tourism Jasper and The Friends of Jasper Gift Shop are also located in the building.

A beautiful new Indigenous art installation is being installed on the grounds of the Jasper Visitors Information Centre. The piece features a large bronze eagle resting on a silver sphere. The words from six Indigenous languages are etched onto it. In addition to the sculpture, new pathways, a seating area and storytelling and art panels highlighting the diverse cultures of the Indigenous communities that partnered to create this installation. The installation honours the histories and cultures of Indigenous peoples including the Anishinaabe, Cree, Dene-zaa, Michif, Secwepemctsín and Stoney. The opening ceremonies are planned for later in 2024.

Bear's Paw Bakery is our favourite Jasper spot for a pre-adventure breakfast, baked goods and coffee. Judging by the people lined up to grab a bite before heading out for a day of skiing at Marmot Basin, it is everyone's favourite spot. Perhaps that is why they now have three locations, the original Bear's Paw Bakery, The Other Paw and 'Lil Paw at Whistler's Campground.

Baxter's Souvenirs and Gifts has been part of Jasper as long as I can remember. In fact, the Baxter family moved to Jasper in 1935 and first opened an ice cream parlour. Later they purchased a larger property and opened Baxter's Gifts and Coffee Shop. I'm not certain if this is the same location. Either way, you never know what you will find in Baxter's Gifts and Souvenirs making it a fun place look around.

Jasper has plenty of shops that sell souvenirs to remember your trip by. You can pretty much find anything you want in Jasper including locally products, books, art and clothing. Naturally the souvenir and gift shops also sell all the novelty and touristy gifts you can dream of. You know, the ones that are so tacky they are actually great. This particular shop had a nice selection of high-end Canadian products, pottery, art, mountain décor and clothing to choose from.

This may be the only time that I have been able to get a picture of main street (Patricia Street) without anyone in it. There are a few places to point out in this photo, like Marmot Basin Sale Centre. Marmot Basin is Jasper's ski hill which has a brand-new Knob Chair this year that I am looking forward to trying out. Syrah's of Jasper is a high-end restaurant, that according to someone we met while paddling on Maligne makes the best food she has ever had. Lastly, look closely at the peak of the mountain. There you can see the top of the Jasper Skytram.

Ana Lea's Candy Lane in Jasper, Alberta, Canada has a huge selection of bulk candies to pick from including an entire wall of Jelly Belly's! I like to pick up a few treats to keep me going during our mountain adventures. They may not be the technical fuel needed during long outdoor adventures, but they sure do make for a nice little pick-me-up along the way or even a bribe when the going gets tough. Don't worry, I also pack plenty of proper nutrition and fuel for our adventures too. After all one can't survive on candy alone.
