Mount Stewart Wildlife Management Area, Mount Stewart, PE consists of over 190 ha of fresh and saltwater marsh along the banks of the Hillborough River. It is a popular spot for local birders, who routinely bring their binoculars, spotting scopes, field guides, and cameras to see if they can spot any waterfowl, gulls, raptors, songbirds or other species that frequent the marsh. The Confederation Trail (aka Trans Canada Trail) provides excellent views of the Hillsborough River, as well as the surrounding wetlands near Mount Stewart. Alternatively, the 3 km Pigot Trail around Allisary Creek allows hikers, walkers, and cross-country skiers to explore a variety of different habitats, including marsh, mixed woodland, riparian, and agriculture. The nearby Hillsborough River Eco-Center in Mount Stewart is a great place to begin, offering information on the natural and cultural history of PEI's Canadian Heritage River, tasty treats from the 'In the Mix Bakery,'public washrooms, and access to the nearby trails. Over 100 bird species have been reported on eBird in the Mount Stewart Wildlife Management Area, making one of Prince Edward Island's hidden birding gems.
