Carousels are a symbol of the amusement industry. The French word "carrousel" means "little battle," a nod to 17th-century European tournaments where horses competed in cavalry skills like ring jousting. Eventually, wooden horses on rotating machines allowed people to practice without tiring real horses, and these inventions eventually became popular at fairs. In some carousels today, you can still spot the symbolism of the jousting rings. Come down and be a knight and ride the carousel at West Coast Amusements on tour this summer through Western Canada, including Victoria, BC.
