Burnstick Lake is a fantastic year round outdoor adventure destination. Surrounded by wilderness, spending some time here is quite relaxing. Burnstick Lake is a very popular summer destination, but is much much quieter during the winter months. We had the lake all to ourselves for a quick evening outting.
Located just west of Sundre, and or Caroline in Alberta, Canada. There are a few summer campgrounds nearby, or Bearberry Cabins for winter accommodations.
Access is easily found from the boat launch near the Burnstick Lake Campground.
After I finished work, I rushed all the gear out to the lake for a quick hour before the sun set. Although the temperature sure drops as darkness falls, it's always so beautiful to get to enjoy a lake sunset. No matter the season.
Just before dark, a layer of fog rolled across the lake. Making me feel like I was far off in the distance on the lake. But really I was just a few meters from shore!

You can see how easily you could become disoriented if weather strikes up a challenge. Make sure you know exactly what direction you need to head when getting off the lake. It's also amazingly difficult to keep your bearings in the pitch black of night. Give yourself plenty of time to get off the ice safely if you aren't experienced.

You've gotta bring snacks while ice fishing. Even if only going for an hour! We love to pop by any local bakeries before hitting the ice. Little Seeker enjoying her peanut butter marshmallow treat from Sundre.
It's always a bonus when the weather allows you to fish outside of the ice fishing tent. Wind is about the only thing that can shut me down and make me hide. Luckily it was a perfectly still, calm evening. Chilly, but manageable outside.
I am currently in uncharted territory for myself during the winter time. Everything is a new adventure daily! I'm familiar enough with this area in the summer months, but it's been fun to explore the Clearwater County in the winter too!
Easy access down onto Burnstick Lake from the campground parking lot. I'd be cautious driving on this lake as there are underwater springs all over causing the ice to be very different in various areas. Be safe!
