Exploring the Wonders of Limberlost Forest and Wildlife Reserve Year Round

Each season transforms Limberlost Forest and Wildlife Reserve, changing not only the landscape but also the wide variety of activities available. Whether you're seeking heart pumping adventure or peaceful relaxation, there's something for everyone in this spectacular corner of Ontario.

For those looking to simply unwind, the reserve offers the chance to relax on docks, verandas, or beaches while breathing the fresh Muskoka air and soaking in the exhilarating views. Before setting out on any activity, all visitors must complete the Safety Responsibility Contract and review the Rules and Regulations to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.

Spring, Summer, and Fall Adventures

Hiking Trails
With over 70 km of hiking trails, Limberlost offers some of the best Ontario hiking trails for all skill levels. Trails are open year round, but during spring and fall, ice cleats may be needed, and after a snowfall, snowshoes are recommended. Dogs are welcome but must remain on a leash at all times. Maps are available online and at the office to help plan your route.

Canoeing
The reserve's twenty plus lakes make it a paddler's paradise. The Crystal Falls Canoe Route is a highlight — a full day adventure beginning on Buck Lake and winding through a chain of lakes to a picturesque waterfall. Maps for summer paddling routes are available to help you plan a scenic day on the water.

Swimming
Visitors are welcome to swim in any of the lakes. For those who prefer a more established beach, there are multiple waterfronts marked on the map. Please note that all swimming is at your own risk, as no lifeguards are on duty.

Biking
While there are no dedicated mountain bike trails, the internal road network is ideal for gravel and road cycling. Mountain bikers are welcome on hiking trails, but these paths were designed for hikers first, so technical features may be challenging. Be prepared to yield to other trail users. Hickory Trail is a great option for adventurous riders.

Winter Activities in the Wilderness

Cross Country Skiing
Winter transforms Limberlost into a Nordic skiing wonderland with over 35 km of groomed cross country ski trails. Trails are maintained throughout the season, offering a mix of routes for both beginners and experienced skiers.

Snowshoeing
Snowshoers can explore anywhere on the property. If using the groomed ski trails, please avoid the set tracks to preserve conditions for skiers. New this season, a limited number of snowshoes are available for rent at the Tuck Shop.

Camping and Cabin Stays in the Wilderness At Limberlost Forest

While day use is free, overnight stays require a reservation for one of the backcountry campsites or cozy cabins. Many campsites are tucked beside lakes, offering opportunities for canoeing, fishing, and stargazing. Cabins range from rustic log structures to modern, fully equipped lodges, making Limberlost a destination for both seasoned campers and those new to overnight outdoor adventures. Because accommodation revenue supports free public access, staying overnight not only provides a memorable experience but also helps maintain the reserve.
