I found Peppers Lake this year while exploring a nearby waterfall. I've since been back many times because I simply fell in love with this little Alberta Lake.
Peppers Lake is gorgeous, nestled in the trees with mountain views peeking out in the distance. The water is clean and clear, with a cool green hue. It is also an enjoyable temperature for swimming! A rare thing in Alberta.
There are many ways to enjoy this area. Take a walk along the trail running beside the lake, or pop into your own private little area on the water from this trail. The initial access of Peppers Lake is only by the boat launch. From there you can walk either way along the lake, but to the west of the boat launch is best if you want a personal lakeside spot. If everyone is grouped up by the launch area and dock, it can get crowded quite quickly as it is a small space. Remember to keep the boat launch clear if someone is coming. It seems to be used as the beach area as well so it can get tricky. Luckily no big power boats allowed here. Do not park at the boat launch. Unload and then park back up the hill near the bathrooms. It is steep to access the lake no matter how you come at it, so if mobility issues are there, this may not be the ideal lake to relax at. Although there is a beautiful bench overlooking the lake near the boat launch.
Fishing Peppers Lake is fun. The trout are quite active most days as you watch them jumping and eating all the bugs landing on the water. You can even see them from up above because the water is so clear. Rainbow and Brook trout are commonly found here. I enjoyed paddleboarding Peppers Lake on the calm days. It can get windy, so be prepared for that if heading out on the water.
These flying friends are everywhere around Peppers Lake! I love the beautiful blue colour. If you want a smile today, do a quick internet search of "Damselfly face up close". There are some pretty cute ones!
The area around Peppers Lake is well treed in. Unfortunately just after my most recent visit to Peppers Lake, it was closed due to a nearby wildfire. I am hoping the fire stayed far enough away from this amazing little spot. The greens were stunning.
I paddled to the far end of the lake wondering if a river came in, or how it flowed. But there was not much on the far west side of the lake. No river to paddle up and continue on.
We saw many people fishing on Peppers Lake in Central Alberta. You'll find rainbow trout and brook trout swimming around in here. Most are just cute small ones, but there is the odd bigger one swimming around of course!
Peppers Lake has a tiny day use area, mixed with the boat launch. The dock is a beautiful T shape, allowing for more nature lovers to enjoy at the same time.
Thanks for taking us there Ange!
