Edmonton's Muttart Conservatory opened in 1976. This beloved attraction was made possible by a large donation from Gladys and Merrill Muttart and was designed by Peter Hemingway.

Muttart is open daily from 10am-5pm except Wednesdays and Thursdays when it is open until 9:00pm. Wednesday nights between 5-9pm are reserved for adults only. This is an affordable attraction to visit as admission is only $7.75 for children 2-12, $12.95 for youth/senior and $14.95 for an adults.

Admission is not required for the public gardens next to Muttart, the outdoor courtyard, Café Bloom or the Marigold Gift Shop making Muttart an attraction suitable for any budget.

Muttart has a total of five pyramids. Three are the temperature regulated biomes. The three different biomes are arid, tropical and temperate. One that is a feature pyramid with themed and seasonal displays and the fifth is a small one over the Center Court. For the remainder of 2023, the featuerd pyramid has a display called Brick by Brick (Lego fans will enjoy this one), Orchids Around the World and lastly, Rocking Around the Christmas Tree.

Circle of life is a mural that wraps around Muttart's Centre Court. It was painted by Alberta Chipewyan Artist, Alex Janvier's in 1978. Janvier is one of Canada's most important and famous Indigenous artisits. He is a founding member of the Professional Native Indian Artists Incorporated which is also known as the ​“Indian Group of Seven”.

Center Court is the central gathering place connecting all 4 pyramids. It is a place to sit and relax and to enjoy a treat from Café Bloom or to play a game. The court is an ode to nature's elements with its inclusion of plants, water and fire features.

This otherworldly glass sculpture called Biota was created by Keith Walker. His goal was to instill feeling of fantasy and wonder in the admirer. He describes it as something dreamlike that is out of this world. Personally, it reminded me of a beautiful underwater world.

The tropical pyramid is hot and humid. Being warm all year, this is a gret place to visit during a cold Canadian winter's day. It is definatley the most colourful pyramid. There is a waterfall feature complete with fish in this pyramid. It is also home to Edmonton's Corpse Flower, which I am thankful that it wasn't in bloom while we visited. Although, I will probably check it out one day, I am honestly not looking forward to experiencing its corpse like sent.

Madagascar Travel Tip - The Travelers Palm is from Madagascar and despite its common name it is not actually a true palm. There are a few theories on how it got its name. One is that its stem sheaths hold water that can be used as emergency water supply by travelers. Another theory it the fan typically grows from east to west making it useful for navigation.

Taking the time to stop and smell flowers is a simple appreciating the good in life and the beauty around us. Slowing down for a moment to appreciate our suuroundings brings joy and fosters a greater sense of well-being and happiness. Not to mention that these flowers just great, well other than the corpse flower. I hear that one has a horrid smell. Still, probably something to experience once.

Many people compare Edmonton's Muttart Conservatory to the glass pyramid at the Louvre in Paris. However, it really should be other way around. Muttart opened in 1978 where as the glass pyramid at the Louvre opened in 1989 to coincide with bicentennial of French revolution.

The Muttart Conservatory is committed to providing the best access experience to all exhibits. Accessibilty feature include, accessible parking, washrooms, power doors and ramp access to the greenhouse. The arid pyramid does have stairs making it only partially accessible, however it does still provide a great experience for visitors. New in 2023, Muttart Conservatory attained Sensory Inclusive certification by KultureCity. Sensory bags are available at no charge. Weighted lap pads, quiet areas, headphones zones and a social story Kulture app are also available.

The Himalayan Blue Poppy is an exquisite and rare flower. It is also one of my favourites.
Bhutan Travel Tip - Apparently it is the national flower of Bhutan so I know which country I will be visiting someday and during the spring when the flower is in bloom.

Muttart is a great place to get your photos taken or to practice your photography skills. We are having fun practicing a basic selfie. One of these days I'll need to figure out how to make them more interesting. Until then, take this as proof that we are enjoying our visit to the Muttart Conservatory in Edmonton's river valley

We visited the Muttart Conservatory on National Indigenous Peoples Day. This is a day that celebrates the history, heritage, and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Métis people. This is a special day for my friend as she is Metis, and we had a wonderful day connecting to the land, learning about plants from near and far. Additionally, we learned more about Indigenous culture, including ribbon skirts. The three of us ladies are wearing ribbon skirts that were handmade by my friend

Located inside the Muttart Conservatory, Café Bloom provides uses fresh ingredients to create high quality meals and snacks. They even use ingredients that are grown at the conservatory in their dishes. In addition to its regular service, the Café serves Sunday brunch between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Marigold Gift Shop specializes in unique gifts and souveniers. Gardening, wildlife and kitchen items are prevalant. As are treasured finds made by local artists and designers. You can even purchase plants to take home to carry the memories and experience with you.
