It was a warm and beautiful day perfect for a hike to the Ink Pots via Banff National Park's world famous Johnston Canyon. Both Johnston Canyon and the Ink Pots are stunning making them an excellent day hike in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Considered a moderately challenging hiking trail there is 448m of elevation gain over nearly 13km. As the canyon is very narrow, at points the trail is a series of catwalks suspended on the canyon wall. The Johnston Canyon portion of the hike has two easily accessible waterfalls. It's not uncommon to see people dressed up very nicely (aka not for hiking) on this section of the hike. Since Johnston Canyon is considered one of the best hikes in Banff it is often busy. Therefore, we opted to take the Moose Meadows trail for the return trip.

This is our cute little mountain cabin (aka bungalow) that we stayed in. This resort is located at the base of Johnston Canyon and has many bungalows of varying sizes as well as a lodge, gift and coffee shop and a restaurant. As soon as we stepped out of the car and took a deep breathe of the fresh mountain air we could feel the stress from a week of work melt away and the relaxation kick in. This is a perfect mountain getaway destination in Banff National Park.

Located 1.1km from the trailhead, the lower falls are easily accessible by nearly everyone. There is a bridge that crosses the canyon to a small tunnel-like cave that leads to a close up view of the waterfall.

Johnston Canyon's upper falls are at 2.7km. Although slightly more rugged, it is still an easy trail to this point. There are two viewpoints for the waterfall here as well.

Spectacular fall foliage colours against one of the five Ink Pots. There are two trailheads that lead to the Ink Pots along the Bow Valley Parkway, Johnston Canyon or the Moose Meadows Trails. Johnston Canyon is the prettier of the two.

Fall hiking in the Canadian Rocky Mountains is fantastic. Not only can the days be warm, the colours are magnificent and the bugs are gone.

It is fun to explore and discover interesting things, like this bridge over the creek at the Ink Pots in Banff.

Fed by springs below, the ink pots colours vary depending on their fill rate. The slower filling pools are a little murky and more green. In this pond you can see the circles where the spring bubbles up.

This Ink Pot has a faster fill rate giving it this beautiful aquamarine colour. You can't go wrong with a weekend at the Johnston Canyon Lodge and Bungalows with a day hike to the Ink Pots via Johnston Canyon.
