Grand Manan is an island in the Bay of Fundy. It is known for its lighthouses, fishing villages, artisans and both a laid back island life or one full of adventure. We had the pleasure of visiting this island in July, 2019.
This beach is in a cove between the Village of Grand Manan and Swallowtail Lighthouse. Thinking, that little house on the beach would be a great place to stay, unfortunately, I believe it is a private residence.
Perched over dramatic cliffs, the Southwest Headlight was built in 1880. Although there were no cliffs to be seen this day, we did return the next day to see them for ourselves. They are dramatic and very beautiful.
Long Eddy was originally built as a navigation station and fog horn and operated as such from 1874-1966. The lighthouse was incorporated into it in 1966.
Although the ferry to Grand Manan is free, the departure ferry is not. However, on a clear day like this we did see whales and other marine animals making it a very economical whale watching tour.
Newton's has been serving locals and visitors for over 100 years. Originally a general store, it is now serves locally roasted coffee, homemade baked goods and is a gift and craft shop.
Built in the early 1900's, Compass Rose Heritage Inn overlooks the Bay of Fundy. It is conveniently located in town and near the ferry terminal. However, the best part is the ocean view.
