Fernie British Columbia is one of my favourite Rocky Mountain ski towns. A year-round adventure seeking destination, Fernie offers non-stop outdoor fun.
During the winter, Fernie is famous for its powder, making it a hotspot for skiing and snowboarding at the Fernie Alpine Resort or cat skiing in the backcountry. Fernie gets so much snow that the Crowsnest Pass leading into Alberta sometimes closes because of it. If you are fortunate enough to make to Fernie only to have the road closed behind you, then you are in for some of the best skiing and boarding of your life. Other activities include fat biking, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling to round out the winter fun. There is no shortage of great après ski experiences in Fernie either. For its size, Fernie has an excellent selection of boutique shops, delicious restaurants, cafes and even a craft distillery. Beyond being famous for snow and outdoor adventures, Fernie is well known for its mighty fine craft beer as well. It is for all of these reasons why we took the time to make a pitstop in Fernie as we passed through on our way to a little (shh, don't tell) cross-border adventure seeking.

Fernie got its start as a coal mining town giving it a different feel compared to other great Canadian Rocky Mountain towns. Mining is still one of Fernie's major industries along with outdoor adventure tourism. I love the downtown Fernie's character. The brick buildings are quite different when compared to Alberta's Rocky Mountain destinations which frequently use wood for construction. The character of the brick buildings makes Fernie a fun place to wander around and explore. Fernie Alpine Resort can be seen in the distance.

Did you know that the antioxidants in dark chocolates have been shown to have a positive affect on exercise performance and that its healthy fats help with recovery??? Since Fernie is full of outdoor adventure activities it would seem that dark chocolate's antioxidants and healthy fats might therefore help with one's sport performance...maybe. Worse case, it makes a nice treat after a hard day of outdoor fun.

The Brick House is in Fernie's historic CIBC bank building. It was renovated to keep its original charm while offering a modern twist on pub culture and has a Mediterranean-inspired menu.

Speaking of playing hard, Fernie Brewing Company even provides some added motivation. Earn yourself a free cold beer and sticker if you complete the FBC Trail to Ale Challenge. You have 24 hours to bike, run or hike 3 peaks (P9, Hypervent and Swine Flu) for a total distance of 40km and 1,200m ascent to earn your reward. I'm going to have to train for this one, excuse me while I go get my workout in.

On this visit to the Fernie Brewing Company, I decided to try a refreshing 'Hit the Deck' Hazy IPA. I like the hazy IPAs because they aren't bitter and typically have a hint of citrus to them.
