The Yardbird suite in Edmonton, Alberta has been the place to go for live jazz and blues music since it opened in 1957. Over the years, many legends of jazz have played here often sharing the stage with local musicians. One thing that I have always found amazing is the amount of respect musicians have for the Yardbird Suite and how much it means to them. Interestingly, the Yardbird Suite is Canada's oldest, and the only volunteer run jazz club in the country! Having never been to a show here we decided it was time for a little cultural adventure.

Yardbird Suite's lobby has a number of photographs celebrating its legendary jazz history. This photograph features three of Yardbird Suite's founders, Terry Hawkeye, Ron Repka and Ken Chaney. Along with the help of a few others, these three ran the Yardbird Suite from 1957 until it closed in 1967 for a few years. The Yardbird Suite was revived in 1973 when the Edmonton Jazz Society was founded. The Society has managed the club ever since.
The Yardbird Suite's original location was on Whyte Avenue in Edmonton. Over the years it moved two other times and even closed briefly before reopening in its current location in Old Strathcona in 1973. It has been in operation ever since.
Yardbird Suite has the feel of a classic jazz club where you could easily expect to see some of jazz's greats, like Miles Davis, Frank Sinatra, and Ella Fitzgerald take to the stage.
The Yardbird Suite is the home of jazz in Edmonton and have been bringing the best in sophistication to the city since 1957 and now they also bring the best in beer too.
This is not your dad’s non-alcoholic beers of days gone by. Run Wild by Athletic Brewing is a non-alcoholic IPA that actually tastes like craft beer. I have to admit, I was skeptical of this one. Fortunately, I was pleasantly surprised by the...

His Ikigai is to delight. He is also very good at it. Tim Tamashiro is an accomplished Alberta jazz singer, keynote speaker, an author, an entertainer, and a former national radio host. As if that wasn't enough, he is also ordained as a Buddhist...
His Ikigai is to delight. He is also very good at it. Tim Tamashiro is an accomplished Alberta jazz singer, keynote speaker, an author, an entertainer, and a former national radio host. As if that wasn't enough, he is also ordained as a Buddhist monk in Thailand. He writes a blog called The Part Time Monk. However, with all this success Tim Tamashiro is still a down-to-earth, Alberta boy with a heart of gold, oh who can sing.
Local musicians Chris Andrew and Andrew Glover accompanied Tim Tamashiro on piano.

As this was my first time seeing a show at the Yardbird Suite I nervous. What does one wear to a show at a legendary jazz club? The Yardbird Suite is friendly, welcoming, and casual, so just wear whatever you like. Honestly, I felt comfortable when I saw Tim Tamashiro take the stage wearing a button up denim shirt underneath a plaid flannel shirt.

Tim Tamashiro wrapped up the evening with one of my favourites, 'What a Wonderful World' and then for the encore he went with The Amazing Spiderman. His singing and show were a delight and filled your heart. Ikigai mission accomplished Tim Tamashiro.
