Crimson Lake Provincial Park has a well-developed trail system. Crimson Lake is near Rocky Mountain House Alberta, in David Thompson Country. It is a popular camping spot during the summer and for cross country skiing during winters with more snow. We took advantage of the mild temperatures over the winter break to hike the 10km Amerada Loop Trail around Crimson Lake. Naturally, our first stop was in Rocky Mountain House to visit our favourite bakery there.

Crimson Lake is a 15 min drive from Mountain House Bakery and Cake Art. It is well signed and easy to get to. The trailhead is in the day use area, near the beach and the playground. The trail around Crimson Lake is called the Amerada Loop. It is 10km long and easy. There is little elevation change. When there is more snow the local nordic ski club grooms the trail.

The Amerada Trail Loop around Crimson Lake is wide enough to walk side by side. We were happy to see that there was a little bit of snow in the area since there wasn't any near Edmonton this December. It was also a warm day, perfect for hiking....
The Amerada Trail Loop around Crimson Lake is wide enough to walk side by side. We were happy to see that there was a little bit of snow in the area since there wasn't any near Edmonton this December. It was also a warm day, perfect for hiking. Not to mention, the snow and the alpine forest made the trail smell fantastic. Even though it was December the smell reminded me of the spring skiing trips we used to take as a child.

There are several shelters along this 10km hike that offer protection from the elements for trail users. All the materials needed to build the shelters were donated by the David Thompson Country Trail Running Committee.

This is one of our first views of Crismon Lake from the Amerada Trail. Despite the unusually warm temperatures this December, the lake was frozen enough for people to be out ice fishing. Here, we are on the far side of the lake looking west towards Crimson Lake’s Island and to the Canadian Rocky Mountains in the distance.

The Amerada Trail on Crimson Lake has kilometer markers, interpretive signs, and rest areas throughout the entire route. There are also two sets of outhouses (pit toilets) on the trail as well.

The Amerada Trail runs along Crimson Lakes shoreline for a small portion of the trail. Hikers can enjoy the warmth of the sun and scenic lake views along this portion of the trail.

This was my favourite bench along the Amerada Trail in Crimson Lake Provincial Park near Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. I like them mountain style of bench. It is so peaceful, sitting in the sun here and taking in the view of the lake.

Beaver Pond is 1.5km from the day use area at Crimson Lake. Or if you take the long way around to Beaver Pond, it is about 8.5km into the 10km hike. This is a small pond with a floating dock and good for bird watching. Even in late December we still managed to spot a bird. We saw a grouse.
