Fogo Island Newfoundland is an amazing island road trip to add to your travel bucket list. Over the last few weeks I have been travelling to rural and remote communities and adventure seeking in “Vana” my camper van. In fact, it was my first excursion to the famous island, best known for the exclusive Fogo Island Inn and red fishing stages balancing precariously over the ocean on protruding rocks.

Visitors can catch the ferry crossing in a tiny community called “Farewell” and the ride takes approximately fifty minutes. Farewell is located about an hour and fifteen minutes from Gander. There was lots of road signage along the way clearly marking the route to the ferry boat. However, look out for the big NL potholes! I am not kidding, the roads in rural areas can be in poor condition so allow plenty of travel time.

During my stay I visited Tilting, Joe Batt’s arm and Fogo. I only stayed one night due to time constraints but I will definitely be going back to explore more in the future. Luckily, my friend and I were able to get a seat at the popular Bang Belly Bistro where I celebrated my birthday with a delicious feast of local grub. The amazing staff at the restaurant even surprised me with a candlelit lemon meringue dessert and a lovely rendition of Happy Birthday! Needless to say It was a birthday trip for the books!

We camped on Sandy Cove Beach near Tilting under the full Harvest moon and fell asleep with the van doors open to the sea and the sound of the North Atlantic Ocean crashing against the rocks mere metres away. It was a very magical experience and I met some very kind and interesting people along the way. In conclusion, Fogo Island was beautiful and I look forward to sharing more of my recent Summer adventures with you all!

I Finally got to visit the spectacular Fogo Island Inn and it was a modern architectural sight to behold. Hovering on stilts along the rugged island coast, the luxury hotel offered breathtaking views of the wild North Atlantic Ocean.

Vana and I caught the ferry to Fogo island and sat back and enjoyed the views of the North Atlantic Ocean and rugged NL coastline. The boat departed from the tiny community of Farewell and the trip to Fogo Island took approximately 50 minutes.

‘Dies For” is a Newfoundland saying for loving something. Personally I dies for NL Coastal Adventures and red and black buffalo plaid!

The ferry excursion to Fogo Island included a stop at the rural Change Islands. I didn’t realize that and tried to exit the boat at the wrong port. Oops! However, it is on my NL travel bucket-list to explore the Change Islands when I have more time.

The NL weather cooperated for my ferry trip to Fogo island. The North Atlantic Ocean was actually very calm for the boat crossing despite the dark clouds looming overhead.

Fogo Island is well known for its historic red fishing stages hanging precariously off the rocks along the coastline. In fact, the rural travel destination, located in East Coast Canada, was a landscape photographers dream!

The Fogo Island Inn is much larger looking in person than one can appreciate in photos. I stared at the luxurious hotel imagining what I would do on a stay there. I think I would be completely happy lying on the bed and gazing out at the sea!...

This traditional Newfoundland fishing shed and wharf represented an old way of life that is fading in NL. It reminded me of my childhood growing up in Little Bay. I could often be found hanging out around the wharf.

Sandy Cove Beach near Tilting on Fogo Island is a beautiful place with lots of rich NL history ! The North Atlantic Ocean kept the air cool despite the sunshine so I always recommend taking a sweater or coat exploring in NL - even in Summer!...

Historic Newfoundland Architecture such as fishing sheds and stages are common sights when exploring Fogo Island. However, this interesting house was quite unique with lots of fine detail and beautiful blooming Summer gardens.

Fogo island Newfoundland was a dream destination for landscape photography. Historic red clapboard sheds balanced on the rocks while lush Summer rose bushes bloomed amongst the rocky terrain adding a floral aroma to the salty air.

While I do love solo travel, there is definitely enjoyment in finding a travel friend who you vibe with. Amanda joined me on a camper van adventure to Fogo Island. This photo was taken at Sandy Cove Beach near Tilting.

An island on an island. Sea salt filled the air while exploring Fogo Island NL this Summer. There were no shortage of places to stop and take in the East Coast island views.

Old Schoolhouse chairs were in use at the popular BangBelly Cafe offering a vintage feel to the dining space. The antique chairs brought back lots of childhood school memories.

The Fogo Island Inn was a focal point while visiting the island this Summer. It stood tall and solitary on the edge of the North Atlantic and looked like a vacation accommodation that I would fully enjoy.

Salt meat gyoza was on the special menu at the cafe but I opted for the ribs. Salt beef is a Newfoundland staple and you will see it pop up on the menu at different locations time and again! It’s salty but delicious!

A seafood chowder shooter arrived at the table to surprise me during my dining experience at the Fogo Island restaurant. It was the perfect start to a fantastic meal after a large day of exploring.

Additionally, My friend and I shared a plate of split pea fritters topped off with split pea pholourie, partridgeberry hot sauce and beet chutney. Needless to say it was absolutely delicious and I licked the plate clean haha! Any meal that incorporates wild Newfoundland berries is a 10/10 in my books!
