Sidney by the Sea as it is known is a 20-minute drive from Victoria BC and located on the northern end of the Saanich Peninsula. It is an authentic small town with a great family vibe, a walkable downtown with a public waterfront and locally owned stores and restaurants.

The Sidney Bakery is proudly using the same recipes today as it did in 1944. They sell a wide range of breads, buns, pastries and cakes.

The Sidney Bakery is open 8 AM to 5 PM and closed on Sundays and Mondays. Two of the dinner plate sized Texas Donuts were already gone by 8:30 on Saturday morning.

After window shopping, upon entering Sidney Bakery there is a long bread rack that extends from the door to the back of the store. This is where all the fresh bread, buns and muffins are kept. I selected a cheese bread this time, after consideration of the fruit bread and raisin bread, both particularly delicious when toasted and then topped with a pat of butter.

Moving from squares to circles, every bakery needs a cookie selection for all those cookie monsters out there. Worth notable mention are the Empire cookies and the Bird's Nest jam cookies. Of course, the macaroons are fabulous too!

More circular bakery items at Sidney Bakery include the pies, tarts, and eccles cakes. The pies change with the season, winter pies and tarts are featured now but in the summer the berry pies will return. These are deep dish pies with over a pound of fruit or vegetable in the case of pumpkin used in the filling. You need strong arms to carry these out the door!

The Sidney Bakery still boxes its bakery items in its traditional pink box which you can see in the right corner of the photo. If you cannot resist and who can, you may have a selection of various sized boxes stacked up and all tied with string.

Two items the bakery is known for is the Sugar lemon and the Cinnamon cream cheese filled donut. My friend and I decided on these selections which we enjoyed with a coffee from a local nearby coffee shop. There are many community seating areas provided outside the shops in Sidney BC. How was it? Amazing. Those donuts practically exploded with the amount of filling they contained and were so fresh and still slightly warm. Definitely will be buying some more of those again.

I recommend stopping at the cute little town of Sidney BC and the Sidney bakery on your next visit to Vancouver Island. The bakery is practically the last of its kind.
