The Annual Brigus Blueberry Festival in Newfoundland Canada is one of my favourite summer festivals to attend in the province. Brigus Newfoundland is very rich in history and was known as “the land of fish and seals”. Furthermore, the town was home to arctic explorer Bob Bartlett. His childhood home, “Hawthorne Cottage” is a designated National Historic Site on the island.

Located just a 50 minute drive from the Capital City of St. John’s, the festival offers live traditional NL music, craft booths, a blueberry pie eating contest, outdoor dances, parades, fireworks and traditional foods from Newfoundland. Blueberries are abundant on the island during this time of year and are celebrated with blueberry cobbler, pie, muffins and all kinds of berry delicious treats!! Last year I sampled the blueberry cobbler and a moose burger which were absolutely delicious! One tip I’d like to offer for the blueberry festival - check your lips and teeth in the mirror regularly! Haha! Fresh Blueberries turn your mouth blue!

Additionally, while attending the Brigus Blueberry Festival, be sure to take a stroll around the historic towns ancient streets and admire the traditional architecture, stone house foundations, graveyards, churches, the Brigus tunnel, and the Stone Barn Museum. Locals will be found at the wharves and docks relaxing on the water. Boats line the waterfront and range from simple wooden traditional dories to luxury yachts. In conclusion, if you are travelling to Newfoundland and Labrador this August check out the Brigus Blueberry Festival - it’s a tasty time!
