The story of how this Canadian Heritage river got its name is pretty interesting and there was indeed a kicking horse involved. The story takes place back in 1858 during the Palliser Expedition. While trying to cross the river, the expedition's doctor, James hector was kicked in the chest by his packhorse. Knocking him senseless the kick caused the expedition to stop for a few days until he recovered.
