Big Chute Marine Railway: A Unique Boating Experience in Ontario
Trent Severn Waterway Adventure with Parks Canada
Explore Georgian Bay, Canal Engineering, and Boating History
The Big Chute Marine Railway, a marvel of engineering along the Trent Severn Waterway, offers one of the most unforgettable experiences for boaters in Ontario. Located a short drive from Coldwater, this rare Parks Canada site lifts boats over a steep incline using a rail system—no traditional lock involved. It’s the only operating marine railway of its kind in North America.
In my teenage years, I navigated the Trent Canal system and experienced the thrill of riding on the Big Chute Marine Railway. Although construction of Lock 44 was delayed due to wartime shortages, a temporary marine railway was built in 1917 and later replaced in 1923. Eventually, the current system opened to the public in 1978. Since then, the spread of invasive species like sea lamprey has been actively prevented thanks to this innovative design.
Moreover, Big Chute offers spacious grounds ideal for picnicking and boater camping, making it a top destination for boating enthusiasts.
Additionally, it’s a great day trip while exploring the Georgian Bay region.
Whether you're into canals, engineering, or boating history, this site will amaze you.
