Whaling Shipwreck S.S. Charcot scuba diving site in Conception Harbour Newfoundland Canada was a reminder of an old way of life on the island. The ship was built in Norway in 1923 for whale hunting on the North Atlantic Ocean. In 1970 during a storm the ship broke its moorings and ran aground. For many years it was believed by locals that this boat was another whaling ship the S.S. Sposa. However, when the "Shipwreck Preservation Society of NL" began doing underwater surveys of the ship they found it to be the S.S. Charcot.

An additional 3 wrecks are hidden below the waters surface at the site in Conception Harbour. Scuba diving is permitted at own risk but a speciality wreck penetration certification is required to dive inside the shipwrecks as they are extremely dangerous.
