Watching the Boats at the Sault Ste. Marie Canal
We visited the Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site and watched the Soo Locks Boat Tours vessel pass through - an experience that never gets old!
This canal has been in operation since 1895 and was once the world's longest lock. It connects Lake Superior to Lake Huron, letting everything from tour boats to private yachts safely navigate the St. Marys River rapids.
The process is like a giant water elevator: boats enter, the gates close, and in about 15 minutes, the water level rises or falls to match the level of the river on the other side. Standing on the canal grounds, you can see it all for free - up close and personal.
Beyond the locks, the site offers walking trails on Whitefish Island, picnic spots, and a dose of Canadian maritime history. If you’re exploring Northern Ontario, it’s a must-see stop for any adventure seeker. ??
