South Alberta Parks & Trails

The Happy Trails Pathway measures about 17+ kilometres in total. The trail is paved, mostly easy going and well maintained. Along the pathway are various access points leading to local parks, recreation facilities, lakes, historic sites and attractions.

High River

The Leitch Collieries are a reminder of the early coal mining days. Built from sandstone, some with pillars, the structures are very impressive to view. The architecture was ahead of its time for coal mining.

Bellevue

The trail follows Lineman Creek most of the way through a forest environment. As the elevation increases the forest thins out and the trail breaks out onto a mountain slope with views of the falls.

Waterton

The Orkney Lookout viewpoint in Drumheller, Alberta is easily accessible, enjoys a large gravel parking lot and is RV friendly... although the short gravel road accessing the viewpoint can be a bit rough.

Drumheller

what really catches your eye and draws allot of attention in Centennial Park is the 26 metre (86 feet) tall Tyannosaurus Rex dinosaur. It is the "World's Tallest Dinosaur" and one of the most visited attractions in the Drumheller Valley.

The Brooks Aqueduct is local tourist attraction and a National and Provincial Historic Site. The aqueduct is on display sitting 20 metres above ground and measuring over 3 kilometres long and 18 metres high.

Heritage Park is a working village, hosted by pioneer actors, measuring over 51 hectares (127 acres) along the shores of the Glenmore Reservoir. Some say it is the largest historical working village in Canada.

Calgary

Located in the Crowsnest Pass of southern Alberta, Canada. The Hillcrest Mines Memorial Park and Cemetery is where you will find a monument for Canada's mining disasters. As well as the public cemetery where the mass graves from the men involved in the Hillcrest Mine disaster were laid to rest.

The green space area along the Oldman River is home to narrow leaf cottonwood trees and many wildlife species. Some of the wildlife sightings commonly viewed in the park include waterfowl., beaver, deer, pheasants, white tailed rabbits and muskrat.

Fort MacLeod

The waterfalls are the main natural attraction in the park. And there are also two historic sites located in the park for viewing - an old creamery and fish hatchery.

Cochrane

The site is remote away from the city of Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada. It is home to fishing derbys and, at times, can be a very busy wilderness campsite destination. However, it is important to know there is very little tree cover providing shelter from the sun.

Rotary Park is situated on the hill north of Memorial Drive and east of Centre Street in the northeast. At the south end of Rotary Park is a beautiful vantage point called Jim Fish Ridge. Named for Jim Fish, a long-time parks visionary and supporter.

The wooden fort consisted of sleeping quarters, a guard room, storage sheds and horse stables. The purpose of the fort was to investigate and get rid of the whisky traders who had set up shop in the region.

Calgary

Shawinigan Park is a sprawling community park with winding paved pathways through beautiful mature trees in Calgary Alberta. This is an excellent park for walking or jogging with benches amongst the trees to rest on.
