In 1979 the United Nations recognized the Dinosaur Provincial Park as a World Heritage Site. So much so , that 81 square kilometres of the heritage park is a natural preserve so to protect the fossil finds in the park. Access is by tour group only.
Much of the parkland is taken up by the lake. Surrounding the lake are groves of trees, prairie grasslands, marsh-like shorelines and a recreation pathway.
Much of the park is out in the open with some tree cover provided on the outskirts of the park. In the centre of the park, where much of the attention is focused, is McKay Lake surrounded by grass lawns.
Kinbrook Island Provincial Park was not established as a provincial park until 1951. Next to the park is the Kinbrook Marsh. It is one of three marshes on Lake Newell along with the Sven Bayer Peninsula and Pelican Island.
The Brooks Aqueduct is local tourist attraction and a National and Provincial Historic Site. The aqueduct is on display sitting 20 metres above ground and measuring over 3 kilometres long and 18 metres high.
