The number of owls the interpretive centre has rescued has been decreasing in the last few years, however, sadly so has the overall population of burrowing owls (due to vanishing habitat), so perhaps not quite a good news story. I was introduced to Cricket, an elderly burrowing owl aged 14 years. Cricket was a rehabilitated owl that could not be returned to the wild and was a school ambassador for many years before his retirement. While almost blind, Cricket had no problem identifying the tasty mealworms that the centre staff member held out to him at the door to his enclosure.
