Winter Car Rental - something to think about

Winter Car Rental - something to think about

You love the snow, you love the mountains and you're looking forward to arriving at the airport in Calgary or Vancouver and picking up your rental car for the drive to winter wonderland...

And you won't be disappointed, the mountains (whether it's the Coast Mountains or the Rocky Mountains) truly are winter wonderland. But, before you head out check with your rental car company on whether your car is equipped with winter tires. Even better, if you are still in the process of planning your trip, request a car with winter tires.

Many of our guests (especially those from overseas unused to winter mountain roads) arrive in rental vehicles with only 4-season tread and, while they all arrive safely, a lot of them mention having some trouble with the handling of the vehicle on the road. And yes, winter driving does require some adjustment but having appropriate tires does help.

If you are unsure what to look for, according to the recommendations from the government of B.C. you should check for at least one of these symbols:

The 3-peaked mountain and snowflake symbol on the side of the tire
These winter tires offer the best traction on snow and ice, and in cold weather.

Also known as mountain/snowflake or alpine.

The mud and snow symbol on the side of the tire
These winter tires offer better traction than summer tires, however, they are less effective than 3-peaked mountain and snowflake tires on snow and ice, and in cold weather.

Also known as M/S, M&S, Mud and Snow. All Season tires must also display the M+S symbol to be considered a winter tire.

Have a safe and enjoyable time in winter wonderland!
