Some Alberta fishing regulations to be aware of when venturing to these or any other fishing destinations-
Is it currently open for fishing? (Seasonal open and close dates) - Some of these areas are available to fish year round while others have open and close dates throughout the year. Please check to make sure you are fishing during open season on any body of water.
Barbless or Barbed hooks - Some of these locations require you to have barbless hooks while fishing. Easily done with your everyday gear by pinching the small barb (that catch lip on the tip of your fishing hooks) with your pliers. Alternatively, you can sand it down with a file as well as the option of purchasing barbless hooks.
Bait vs No Bait - This is a big one as it varies for each and every location you'll visit while fishing. Is bait allowed? Please understand what is considered bait. Even your scented plastic worms are classified as bait in southern Alberta.
Fishing Hours (Daily) - Some places have open and closed times and are not open for fishing 24 hours a day.
Catch and Release or Allowed a Catch Limit - Another important factor is whether you can keep any of the fish you catch or not. Some of these destinations are strictly catch-and-release while others have catch limits of what you are allowed to keep.
Licenses - Anyone over 16 and under 65 that is helping a child fish needs to have their Alberta Fishing License, excluding First Nations Persons, which can be acquired easily from such places as Canadian Tire, Cabela's, or just about any outdoor retailer or parks office. Licenses in Alberta are valid from April 1st to March 31st each year, not January to December. Day pass licenses are available as well!
