Winter Adventure at Fenelon Falls and Lock 34 - Nestled within the heart of Ontario's Kawartha Lakes region, Fenelon Falls transforms into a picturesque winter wonderland when snow blankets the town and its iconic Lock 34 of the Trent-Severn Waterway. This past winter, I embarked on an adventure to explore this charming village and its historic lock, uncovering both its natural beauty and storied past.

Despite the recent cold, the water still flows over Fenelon Falls located beside Lock 24.

Fenelon Falls and Lock 34 are integral to the Trent-Severn Waterway, a 386-kilometre-long canal system that connects Lake Ontario to Georgian Bay. Completed in 1887, Lock 34 was designed to facilitate boat traffic and commerce between the lakes. Its construction played a crucial role in transforming Fenelon Falls into a bustling hub for timber and agricultural trade during the 19th century. Today, while its original purpose has evolved, Lock 34 remains a vital passage for recreational boaters, a focal point of local tourism, and has been designated a National Historic Site of Canada.

During the warmer months, the lock welcomes hundreds of vessels, from kayaks to luxury yachts, as they navigate the historic waterway. In winter, however, the area takes on a serene quality, attracting visitors seeking quietude, scenic vistas, and winter activities.

This beautiful and historic area is located just steps from coffee shops, boutiques, local stores and restaurants in Fenelon Falls, as seen here in the distance.
Upon arriving in Fenelon Falls, I was immediately charmed by the snow-dusted streets lined with quaint shops and cafes. The town, often referred to as the "Jewel of the Kawarthas," boasts a welcoming atmosphere year-round, but there's something uniquely magical about visiting during winter. Under a bright blue, sunny sky, with the temperature hovering just below freezing, the crisp air was invigorating, and the soft crunch of snow underfoot added to the charm of the experience.

A boat using this lock will experience a height difference of about 7 meters!

As I approached Lock 34, its impressive stonework stood in stark contrast to the surrounding snowy landscape. The lock gates were beautifully highlighted by icicles glinting in the sunlight. The adjacent falls, not yet frozen, showcased nature's artistry with cascading water and the beginnings of intricate ice formations.

Meanwhile, interpretive signs near the lock provided insight into its history and operation. For instance, I learned that Lock 34's hand-operated mechanisms have been preserved over the years, allowing visitors to appreciate its historic craftsmanship. During the summer, Parks Canada staff operate the lock, but in winter, it serves as a peaceful reminder of its storied past.

Looking over to the "lower" side of the lock, the water appeared frozen solid. Total drop is an average of 7m.
Wherever possible, walkways were kept accessible and clear of snow including traveling under Lindsay Street!
After taking in the sights at the lock, I continued along the nearby trails. Many paths surrounding Fenelon Falls are maintained year-round, making them ideal for winter hiking and snowshoeing. Along the way, panoramic views of the Trent-Severn Waterway offered opportunities for breathtaking photos.
