The Grand Beach Provincial Park is located on the eastern shore of Lake Winnipeg in the province of Manitoba, Canada. The park was established in 1961 and since then the provincial park and the sandy beach are the highlight attractions of the East Beach region.
The East Beach region includes a hand full of sandy beach destinations and small resort villages located on the eastern shoreline of Lake Winnipeg. In the centre of the region is the Grand Beach Provincial Park and anchoring the south end of the region is the Patricia Beach Provincial Park.
Lake Winnipeg is the worlds 10th largest fresh water lake. Grand Beach Provincial Park is one of the more popular parks on the large lake. The beach park is a mixture of eco systems consisting of 12 foot sand dunes, long sandy beaches, jackpine forests, wetland bogs and marshland.
The 3 kilometre sandy beach in the Grand Beach Provincial Park is the main attraction in the park. The beach consists of two sandy beaches - East and West Beach. They are separated by a lake channel and connected by a wooden footbridge.
The beaches are popular for swimming, sunbathing and beachcombing. Swimming is enjoyed on, both, the East and West Beaches. Each beach has a roped off area for swimming. Lifeguards are not on location. Always keep an eye on the little ones at all times.
The water activities enjoyed during the summer sunshine months on Lake Winnipeg include boating, sailing, water skiing, wind surfing, kite boarding, canoeing and fishing for perch, northern pike, walleye, silver bass, carp and/or catfish.
Some like to fish from the shore while others bring a boat. The facilities in the area include docks, boat launches, trailer parking and a marina. There are other marinas located in Albert Beach and Balsam Bay outside of the park.
To explore the forested regions in the park there are some short, easy and interpretive walking trails and there are some tougher wilderness trails.
For a casual introduction to the park start with the "Boardwalk". It is an easy going interpretive walking path with signs lining the shore providing great views. The "Boardwalk" and the barefoot walk along the 3 kilometre white sandy beach are suitable for all ages and fitness levels.
Other self guided trails in the park include the Ancient Beach Trail (2.1 kms), Wild Wings Trail (1 km) and the Spirit Rock Walking Trail (1.1 kms). Located on the trails are amenities like viewpoints, picnic shelters, washrooms, pit toilets, resting benches, information signs and trail markers.
The Ancient Beach Trail leads to a viewpoint over looking Lake Winnipeg. The Wild Wings Trail is a birdwatching trail exploring a marsh leading to viewing platforms. Spirit Rock Walking Trail leads to a series of large boulders left behind by the ice age.
There are over 30 kilometres of backcountry trails exploring the wilderness regions in the Grand Beach Provincial Park. Some of the trails include the Jack Pine (2.6 kms - easy); Blueberry (3.2 kms - easy); Boulder Hill (6.1 kms - moderately difficult); Beaver Pond (13.3 kms - moderately difficult); Squirrel Run (12 kms expert) and the TCT (Trans Canada Trail).
The Grand Beach Provincial Park includes a full service campground, a day use picnic area and a waterslide park. Services in the campground include an amphitheater, campground office, accommodations, boat launch, serviced campsites, grocery store, laundry, showers, sani dump, washrooms, picnic areas and water taps.
Services near the beach include a concession, swimming area, change rooms, day use picnic area, playground, shelter, washrooms, boat launch and pit toilets.
During the winter months the snow and cold temperatures transform the park into a winter playground. Adventures enjoyed during the snow season include xc skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and ice fishing.
During the winter months the hiking trails get buried in snow and quickly morph into cross country ski trails. The ski trails are equipped with warming shelters, pit toilets and staging areas.
The Jack Pine (2.6 km) and Blueberry (3.2 km) ski trails are recommended for novices; intermediate skiers will enjoy the Boulder Hill (6.1 km) and Beaver Pond (13.3 km) ski trails; and expert skiers will find the Squirrel Run (12.6 km) challenging.
Some backcountry trails are designated for snowmobiling. However... most of the snowmobile routes explore outside the park boundaries except for a group of trails located in the far eastern section of the park. The snowmobile routes connect to larger trail systems connecting to Belair Provincial Forest, Pine Falls, Lac du Bonnet, Gimli and the Can-Am International Trail.
