Halibut Bight Rest Area

A secluded waterfront park not far from the Village of Skidegate on Graham Island of the Haida Gwaii, BC, Canada. The rest area / picnic area is tucked away behind some trees on a pull-out section off of Hwy 16, just 25 km north of Skidegate Village.

Halibut Bight - Haida Gwaii, BC Photo GalleryThe Halibut Bight Rest Area offers up ocean views overlooking Hecate Strait. The area is an ideal spot to sometimes see whales spouting in the distance during the summer months. The whales come to rest and feed along the shallow gravel waters in the inlet. There are many waterfront views from the main hwy between Tlell and Skidegate, especially around the Halibut Bight, Jungle Beach and Second Beach areas.

Halibut Bight, decades ago, was a prime seasonal fishing site. Today, the shoreline is a developed rest area with 4 picnic tables, a parking lot, pit toilets, some grassy areas and the best part... it is only, a few steps away from the ocean and sandy, rocky beaches. Beachcombing with the seabirds is always an option too.

From any of the picnic tables at the Halibut Bight Rest Area one can view the marine activity coming and going from Graham Island. Some say the ocean channel between Lawn Point and Halibut Bight is one of the trickiest passages on the main northern marine route. If the winds are blowing, especially a southeast gale... a marine vessel better be ready and alert.
