Calgary Stampede vs Houston Rodeo

A Canadian’s Perspective on Two Western Icons

Classic ferris wheel in Houston Texas

If you didn’t know where you were… would you guess Texas or Canada?

That was the question I kept asking myself while walking through the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. As someone who has spent years attending the Calgary Stampede in Alberta, the similarities were immediate.

Boots.

Crowds.

Food.

That nonstop western energy.

At their core, both events feel incredibly familiar. Large-scale, family-friendly celebrations of western culture, packed with history and excitement. But look a little closer, and each brings its own regional personality.

When They Happen: Spring vs Summer Rodeo Season

The Houston Rodeo runs for about 20–23 days in March, aligning with spring break in Texas.

The Calgary Stampede takes place over 10 days in July, right in the heart of summer when Calgary fully embraces Stampede season.

Different timing, same result - big crowds and high energy.

Same temperature!

Midway & Atmosphere: Big vs Busy

The Calgary Stampede midway with rides, food, and crowds under a perfect blue sky.

Walking through the midway at both events, it’s surprisingly similar.

• Massive rides

• Bright colours

• Game booths and prizes

• Constant movement and energy

Houston feels larger in scale, with more space to explore.

Calgary feels busier per day, with a more compact layout and denser crowds.

Either way, you’re getting a full-day experience.

Food: Texas Variety vs Calgary Traditions

Houston Rodeo food stands lean into big variety and bold flavours. Similar to Calgary, just with a Texas twist.

Food is a huge part of both events, and this is where regional flavour really shows.

Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Food

• Huge variety

• Over-the-top creations

• BBQ, deep-fried everything, bold flavours

Calgary Stampede Food

• Creative midway foods

• Classic staples like mini donuts

• Local favourites

And one standout tradition:

Pancake breakfasts

Across Calgary during Stampede, free pancake breakfasts are hosted all over the city by community groups, businesses, and volunteers. It’s one of the most unique and welcoming parts of the experience.

Houston doesn’t have a direct equivalent, but it brings its own food culture through vendors and large-scale BBQ events.

A classic Calgary Stampede pancake breakfast is simple, local, and part of the tradition.

Entertainment: One Big Show vs Choose-Your-Own Experience

The Coke Stage at the Calgary Stampede has free live music and packed crowds all day long.

Both events bring in major artists, but the experience feels different.

Houston Rodeo

• Rodeo and concert happen in the same stadium

• One ticket includes both

• The night flows from competition to live performance

• Big-name artists perform as part of that single main event

Calgary Stampede

• Rodeo, concerts, and stages are separate experiences

• Big-name artists can appear across multiple venues, not just one stage

• The Saddledome hosts major ticketed concerts

• Outdoor stages like the Coke Stage and Nashville North run throughout the grounds

• The Coke Stage is free, making live music accessible to everyone

In Houston, the night builds toward one big shared show

In Calgary, you can experience multiple concerts, some free, all in the same day

In Calgary, you might stumble into a big-name artist without even planning for it.

Culture & Agriculture: The Heart of Both Events

Rodeo Events of all kinds. Always interesting to wander into the rodeo areas to see what is going on.

Beyond the midway, both the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and the Calgary Stampede are built around agriculture, competition, and community.

You’ll find the same core rodeo events on both sides of the border:

• Bull riding

• Barrel racing

• Steer wrestling

• Roping events

Some competitors travel between Texas and Alberta, competing across the same North American rodeo circuit.

Both events give back in big ways by supporting youth programs, agriculture, and local groups.

In Calgary, the Stampede also highlights Indigenous culture and history, with areas like Elbow River Camp sharing traditions, stories, and community.

It adds another layer to the experience that goes beyond the rides and shows.

Parade Traditions: Kickoff vs Celebration

Calgary Stampede Parade rolling through downtown Calgary, where western heritage meets city streets and thousands gather to kick off rodeo season in Canada.

Both cities host parades, but the scale is very different. Calgary's Stampede Parade draws hundreds of thousands of people downtown and feels like a major city-wide kickoff, while Houston's rodeo parade is smaller and more local in feel, with strong participation but less overall crowd size.

Calgary Stampede Parade

• Massive downtown event

• Official kickoff to Stampede

• One of the most recognizable traditions

• Larger attendance numbers

Houston Rodeo Parade

• Large downtown event

• Horses, wagons, western groups

• Kickoff to the Houston Rodeo

Calgary’s parade starts the party.

Houston’s parade builds the excitement.

Attendance: Bigger vs Busier

Looking at previous years numbers:

• Houston Rodeo: 2,735,695 visitors over 23 days

• Calgary Stampede: 1,470,288 visitors over 10 days

Daily average:

• Houston: ~118,900/day

• Calgary: ~147,000/day

Calgary actually sees more visitors per day!

If you’re planning a trip around either event, what’s nearby adds even more to the experience. Both Alberta and Texas share a deep love for road tripping culture.

• The Rocky Mountains are just a short drive away

• Wildlife experiences, including grizzly bear sightings

• Lakes, hiking, and iconic Alberta scenery

Around Houston

• Wetlands and wildlife, including American Alligator sightings

• Beaches along the Gulf Coast

• A completely different southern landscape

Exciting Local Finds

Calgary Stampede vs Houston Rodeo | More Similar Than You’d Expect

I underestimated Canada's Calgary Stampede known as "The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth."

The biggest surprise wasn’t the differences, it was how similar these two events feel.

Both the Calgary Stampede and the Houston Rodeo are:

• Family-friendly

• Deeply rooted in history

• High energy

• Full-day (or multi-day) experiences

If you enjoy one, you’ll feel right at home at the other.

The setting may change.

The scale may shift.

But that western spirit?

It’s the same on both sides of the border.
