Enniskillen Conservation Area On The Oak Ridges Moraine

Enniskillen Conservation Area, located in Durham Region near Oshawa, Ontario, spans 65 hectares and showcases the natural beauty of the Oak Ridges Moraine’s south slopes. The area features a diverse range of ecosystems, including a cedar swamp, open wetlands, and bubbling brooks. These habitats provide a home for a variety of wildlife and offer a peaceful, scenic environment for visitors to explore. With 5.5 km of trails, the conservation area invites hikers and nature enthusiasts to immerse themselves in the beauty of its mixed deciduous forest, which is also home to Bowmanville Creek and two picturesque ponds.

A Rich History At Enniskillen

The conservation area is not only a place of natural wonder but also of historical significance. One notable feature is the remnants of the Moorey Grist Mill, which once operated in the area from its construction in 1874 until it was dismantled in 1956. The mill utilized the constant flow of water from the Bowmanville Creek, which continues to run through the property today. Though the mill itself is no longer standing, the earthen dam that once held back the creek to create a millpond still remains, offering a glimpse into the area’s past.
