Begbie Lookout

Begbie Lookout Trail is a short but steep hiking path located south of the community of 100 Mile House, British Columbia, Canada. The hiking trail climbs up the side of Begbie Mountain to a 1923 working Forest Fire Lookout Station used during the summer months to spot wildfires.

The lookout station sits at an elevation of 1276 metres and towers over the entire valley. The two story wooden lookout has a wrap around deck providing 360 degree views of lakes, mountains and trees. On clear day one can see Wells Gray Park in the east and the Marble Mountain Range in the west.

The hiking trail leading up to the lookout involves navigating of a short series of switchbacks. The trail is rough and involves hiking over loose rocks, exposed tree roots and around large boulders. It is a single-track trail that follows a ridge most of the way, so it is important to have good hiking boots and to be aware at all times of your footing.

At the base of the trail is a picnic table, pit toilets, an information billboard (although in rough shape and hard to read) and a large gravel parking lot. At the top of the trail is another pit toilet for public use and a picnic table. The hike to the top takes no longer than 5-10 minutes but do not be deceived as it is a good work out. The views are well worth the effort!
