Peter Lougheed Provincial Park is located south of Canmore, Alberta, Canada in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. The park is an environment full of majestic mountain ranges, snow capped peaks, wildlife, wilderness lakes, rivers, creeks and streams.

Peter Lougheed Provincial Park PhotosIn Peter Lougheed Provincial Park are a selection of serviced campgrounds, walk-in wilderness campsites, picnic sites, staging areas for horseback riding, canoe launch sites, day hikes, recreation trials and fishing rivers.

Highwood Pass (Hwy 40), the main transportation route in and out of the park, is a sightseeing and a cycling route - as well as- the highest elevation highway in Canada.

Some of the summer and winter activities enjoyed in the Peter Lougheed Park include fishing, hiking, mountain biking, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, horseback riding, picnicking, kayaking, birdwatching, camping, cycling and wildlife watching.

Some of the wildlife in the park includes moose, wolves, bears, coyote, bighorn sheep, elk and mountain goats.

Much of the park focuses around Lower and Upper Kananaskis Lakes. There is an information centre, lodge, bike paths and campgrounds. The access road to the lakes leads to more campgrounds, picnic sites, day use areas and trailheads for local hiking trails. Many, if not all, provide spectacular views.

Some recreation wilderness trails in the Peter Lougheed Provincial Park are day hikes only. Of these... some are easy interpretive trails while others are full day elevation hikes. Plan accordingly.

Day hikes include the Lower Lake, Marl Lake, Boulton Creek, Chester Lake, Mount Black Prince, Rock Glacier, Canadian Mount Everest Expedition and Rawson Lake Hiking Trails.

There are also backpacking trails with wilderness camping in the park. These are best explored by the experienced backpacker prepared for alpine weather, wildlife and extreme conditions. Some also double as horseback riding trails.

Wilderness backpacking trails include the Three Isle Lake, Upper Kananaskis Lake, Elk Pass and Turbine Canyon and Elbow Lake Trails.
